ذَٰلِكَ مِنْ أَنۢبَآءِ ٱلْغَيْبِ نُوحِيهِ إِلَيْكَ ۖ وَمَا كُنتَ لَدَيْهِمْ إِذْ أَجْمَعُوٓا۟ أَمْرَهُمْ وَهُمْ يَمْكُرُونَ ١٠٢
This is of the tidings of the Unseen which We inspire in thee (Muhammad). Thou wast not present with them when they fixed their plan and they were scheming.
That is from the news of the unseen which We reveal, [O Muhammad], to you. And you were not with them when they put together their plan while they conspired.
(O Muhammad), this is part of news from the Unseen that We reveal to you for you were not present with them when Joseph's brothers jointly resolved on a plot.
يَقُولُ تَعَالَى لِعَبْدِهِ وَرَسُولِهِ مُحَمَّدٍ، صَلَوَاتُ اللَّهِ وَسَلَامُهُ عَلَيْهِ، لَمَّا قَصَّ عَلَيْهِ نَبَأَ إِخْوَةِ يُوسُفَ، وَكَيْفَ رَفَعَهُ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ، وَجَعَلَ لَهُ الْعَاقِبَةَ وَالنَّصْرَ وَالْمُلْكَ وَالْحُكْمَ، مَعَ مَا أَرَادُوا بِهِ مِنَ السُّوءِ وَالْهَلَاكِ وَالْإِعْدَامِ: هَذَا وَأَمْثَالُهُ يَا مُحَمَّدُ مِنْ أَخْبَارِ الْغُيُوبِ السَّابِقَةِ، ﴿نُوحِيهِ إِلَيْكَ﴾ وَنُعْلِمُكَ بِهِ لِمَا فِيهِ مِنَ الْعِبْرَةِ لَكَ وَالِاتِّعَاظِ لِمَنْ خَالَفَكَ، ﴿وَمَا كُنْتَ لَدَيْهِمْ﴾ حَاضِرًا عِنْدَهُمْ وَلَا مُشَاهِدًا لَهُمْ ﴿إِذْ أَجْمَعُوا أَمْرَهُمْ﴾ أَيْ: عَلَى إِلْقَائِهِ فِي الْجُبِّ، ﴿وَهُمْ يَمْكُرُونَ﴾ بِهِ، وَلَكِنَّا أَعْلَمْنَاكَ بِهِ وَحْيًّا إِلَيْكَ، وَإِنْزَالًا عَلَيْكَ، كَمَا قَالَ تَعَالَى: ﴿وَمَا كُنْتَ لَدَيْهِمْ إِذْ يُلْقُونَ أَقْلامَهُمْ أَيُّهُمْ يَكْفُلُ مَرْيَمَ وَمَا كُنْتَ لَدَيْهِمْ إِذْ يَخْتَصِمُونَ﴾ [آلِ عِمْرَانَ: ٤٤] وَقَالَ تَعَالَى: ﴿وَمَا كُنْتَ بِجَانِبِ الْغَرْبِيِّ إِذْ قَضَيْنَا إِلَى مُوسَى الأمْرَ وَمَا كُنْتَ مِنَ الشَّاهِدِينَ﴾ [الْقَصَصِ: ٤٤] إِلَى أَنْ قَالَ: ﴿وَمَا كُنْتَ بِجَانِبِ الطُّورِ إِذْ نَادَيْنَا وَلَكِنْ رَحْمَةً مِنْ رَبِّكَ﴾ [الْقَصَصِ: ٤٦] وَقَالَ ﴿وَمَا كُنْتَ ثَاوِيًا فِي أَهْلِ مَدْيَنَ تَتْلُو عَلَيْهِمْ آيَاتِنَا وَلَكِنَّا كُنَّا مُرْسِلِينَ﴾ [الْقَصَصِ: ٤٥] وَقَالَ ﴿مَا كَانَ لِيَ مِنْ عِلْمٍ بِالْمَلإ الأعْلَى إِذْ يَخْتَصِمُونَ إِنْ يُوحَى إِلَيَّ إِلا أَنَّمَا أَنَا نَذِيرٌ مُبِ﴾ [ص: ٦٩، ٧٠]
يُقَرِّرُ تَعَالَى أَنَّهُ رَسُولُهُ، وَأَنَّهُ قَدْ أَطْلَعَهُ عَلَى أَنْبَاءِ مَا قَدْ سَبَقَ مِمَّا فِيهِ عِبْرَةٌ لِلنَّاسِ وَنَجَاةٌ لَهُمْ فِي دِينِهِمْ وَدُنْيَاهُمْ؛ وَمَعَ هَذَا مَا آمَنَ أَكْثَرُ النَّاسِ؛ وَلِهَذَا قَالَ: ﴿وَمَا أَكْثَرُ النَّاسِ وَلَوْ حَرَصْتَ بِمُؤْمِنِينَ﴾ وَقَالَ ﴿وَإِنْ تُطِعْ أَكْثَرَ مَنْ فِي الأرْضِ يُضِلُّوكَ عَنْ سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ﴾ [الْأَنْعَامِ: ١١٦] إِلَى غَيْرِ ذَلِكَ مِنَ الْآيَاتِ.
وَقَوْلُهُ: ﴿وَمَا تَسْأَلُهُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ أَجْرٍ﴾ أَيْ: وَمَا تَسْأَلُهُمْ يَا مُحَمَّدُ عَلَى هَذَا النُّصْحِ وَالدُّعَاءِ إِلَى الْخَيْرِ وَالرُّشْدِ مَنْ أَجْرٍ، أَيْ: مِنْ جُعَالة وَلَا أُجْرَةٍ عَلَى ذَلِكَ، بَلْ تَفْعَلُهُ ابْتِغَاءَ وَجْهِ اللَّهِ، وَنُصْحًا لِخَلْقِهِ.
﴿إِنْ هُوَ إِلا ذِكْرٌ لِلْعَالَمِينَ﴾ أَيْ: يَتَذَكَّرُونَ بِهِ وَيَهْتَدُونَ، وَيَنْجُونَ بِهِ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ.

Summary
The subject matter of this Surah indicates that it was revealed during the last stage of the Holy Prophet's residence at Makkah, when the Quraish were considering the question of killing or exiling or imprisoning him. At that time some of the unbelievers put this question (probably at the instigation of the Jews) to test him :'Why did the Israelites go to Egypt?'' This question was asked because they knew that their story was not known to the Arabs for there was no mention of it whatever in their traditions and the Holy Prophet had never even referred to it before.
